Eco Church at Tewkesbury Abbey
Caring for Creation Together
At Tewkesbury Abbey, we believe that caring for the earth is part of our calling. That’s why we’re part of Eco Church – a nationwide programme helping churches care for God’s creation in everything we do, from worship to buildings, land, community and lifestyle.
We have already achieved bronze status and are currently working towards our Silver Eco Church Award, building on the steps we’ve already taken to make the Abbey a greener, more sustainable place for everyone.
What We’re Doing
Here are just a few of the ways we’re putting our faith into action:
- Energy & Buildings: Switching to LED lighting and buying fossil free energy
- Land & Nature: Caring for the Abbey grounds, encouraging visitors to notice the nature around us, and encouraging biodiversity.
- Worship & teaching: holding regular Wild Worship services for all ages and celebrating God’s relationship with, and work in, creation throughout our services.
- Lifestyle: Choosing Fairtrade and local produce in our shop and café.
- Community: Hosting and supporting events like “Wild about the Abbey” with our partners the John Moore Museum and Tewkesbury Nature Reserve, joining in with action to protect our rivers from pollution, and getting involved in activities like the Big Garden Birdwatch to inspire conversation and action.
How You Can Get Involved
Eco Church isn’t just for us — it’s for everyone, whether you worship at the Abbey or not.
- 🌱 Join in our monthly Eco Tips – simple actions you can try at home.
- 🌱 Take part in events – from seed planting to birdwatching.
- 🌱 Volunteer – help us care for the Abbey grounds or join our Eco Church working group.
- 🌱 Pray for creation – add your voice as we pray for a greener, fairer world.
Why It Matters
Small changes add up. Together, we can protect nature, reduce waste, and care for the beautiful world we live in – right here in Tewkesbury and beyond.
“We recognize the goodness of creation; we acknowledge our part in the fallenness of the world in which we live and accept the urgency of the present climate and ecological crises. We are committed to becoming more sustainable and environmentally friendly as we believe this reflects God’s love for God’s created world, and our desire to live in a positive relationship with the world God created.”
